Se tourner les pouces signifie ne rien faire, être fainéant. Cette expression apparaît au XVIIème siècle sous sa première forme "les pouces à la ceinture" qui signifie ne rien faire, c'est une expression facile à imager, quelqu'un qui aurait ses pouces à la ceinture ne peut pas bouger ou travailler. Elle se transforme ensuite en 1834 en "tourner les pouces". En effet, l'image de quelqu'un qui tourne ses pouces fait référence à une personne qui s'ennuie et est inactive. C'est ensuite au XIXème siècle que l'expression prend sa forme actuelle "se tourner les pouces". À cette époque, la langue populaire associait les pouces à l'oisiveté.

"Se tourner les pouces" means doing nothing, being lazy. This expression appears in the seventeenth century in its first form "les pouces à la ceinture" (the thumbs to the belt) which means to do nothing, it is an expression easy to imagine, someone who would have their thumbs laying on thier belt cannot move or work. It was then transformed in 1834 into "tourner les pouces" (twiddling your thumbs). Indeed, the image of someone who fiddles with thier thumbs refers to a person who is bored and inactive. It is then in the nineteenth century that the expression takes its current form "se tourner les pouces". At that time, the popular language associated thumbs with idleness.

L'origine de cette expression est très facile à imager. En effet, manger sur le pouce est apparu au XIXème siècle, période où les ouvriers se servaient beaucoup de leur couteau, donc de leur pouce, pour leur casse-croûte quotidien à base de pain… et leurs repas devaient être avalés rapidement par manque de temps. C'est donc aux ouvriers que l'on doit l'expression "manger sur le pouce".

The origin of this expression is very easy to imagine. Indeed, "manger sur le pouce" appeared in the 19th century, when the workers used their knives and their thumbs, frequently for their daily bread-based snack... and their meals had to be devoured quickly because of lack of time. So it is to the workers that we owe the saying "eat on the go".

Cette expression a d'abord existé sous la forme "donner un coup de pousse" ce qui signifie aider quelqu'un, lui apporter un peu d'aide, métaphoriquement le pousser à réussir quelque chose, puis est ensuite apparu l'expression "donner un coup de main" qui a la même signification. C'est ainsi qu'au XIXème siècle, progressivement "coup de pousse" est devenu "coup de pouce" à cause de sa proximité avec l’expression "coup de main".

This expression first existed in the form of "donner un coup de pousse" (give a push) which means to help someone, to give him a little help, metaphorically push him to succeed in something, then appeared the expression "donner un coup de main" (give a hand) which has the same meaning. And in the nineteenth century, gradually "donner un coup de pousse" became "donner un coup de pouce" because of its proximity to the expression "donner un coup de main".
